How to run a survey with Mentimeter (Survey mode)

Use Survey mode to collect responses asynchronously - participants answer your questions at their own pace, whenever suits them.

To run a survey with Mentimeter, set your presentation to Survey mode. In Survey mode, participants move through the slides on their own devices at their own pace, instead of following along live, so you can collect input before a session or over days or weeks. Survey mode is available on all Mentimeter plans, including Free.
You can build your survey from scratch or start from one of Mentimeter's survey templates.

What is the difference between Presentation mode and Survey mode?

Mentimeter offers two ways for your audience to move through a presentation:

  • Presentation mode — the presenter controls which slide is shown on participants' voting devices. Use this for live sessions.

  • Survey mode — participants move through the slides on their own, in their own time. Use this for asynchronous surveys.

How to set a presentation to Survey mode

  1. Open your presentation in the Edit view.

  2. Click the Settings icon (cogwheel).

  3. Under the presentation pace setting, select Survey.

Once set to Survey mode, voting stays open for as long as you need — there is no time limit.

The screenshot below shows the Survey mode option in the Settings menu of the Mentimeter Edit view:

How to share your survey with participants

For surveys, share the voting link or the QR code rather than the 8-digit voting code. The 8-digit code is temporary — it changes after the presentation has been inactive for 2 days — so participants may not be able to join with an old code later. The voting link and QR code keep working for the whole time your survey is open.

How to close your survey and stop collecting responses

When you want to stop collecting responses:

  1. In your presentation, click the Share button (next to "Start presentation").

  2. Open the Participants tab.

  3. Toggle off Enable participation.

After you turn off participation, anyone who opens the survey link will see the message: "This presentation is closed. The presenter has turned off voting access for this presentation." Your collected results remain available to you on the results page.

The Share dialog in Mentimeter, open on the Participants tab, with the 'Enable participation' toggle switched on and highlighted.

Which slide types work in Survey mode?

All question slide types work in Survey mode except Quiz Competition slides (Select Answer and Type Answer). Quiz Competitions require participants to answer live at the same time, so a presentation containing Quiz Competition slides must be run in Presentation mode. If you can't switch your presentation to Survey mode, check whether it contains a Select Answer or Type Answer slide and remove or replace it (for example, with a Multiple Choice slide).

Pro tip: if you want to collect input on your survey over a longer period of time, we recommend sending participants the voting link or sharing the QR-code, rather than the 8-digit voting code, since the voting code is temporary and will be renewed every few days. You can learn more about the voting code validity here.
