Teachers can use Mentimeter together with PowerPoint and their Learning Management System to present interactive Menti slides while collecting student responses through the LMS.
This is useful when you want to run a Menti as part of a graded assignment. The Menti can be presented from PowerPoint, but students must access it through the LMS in order for their participation or results to be connected to the assignment.
How it works
To use Mentimeter with PowerPoint and an LMS, you need to add the same Menti in two places:
In your LMS, where students will access the assignment.
In PowerPoint, where you will present the Menti slide.
The PowerPoint workflow is the same across supported LMS platforms. The main difference is how you create the assignment in each LMS.
Using PowerPoint and Moodle
Start by creating your assignment in Moodle.
Open your Moodle course.
Turn on Edit mode.
Add a new Menti activity.
Select the Menti you want to use.
Make the activity graded.
Select Save and return to course.
The Menti assignment is now created in Moodle.
Add the same Menti to PowerPoint
Open your PowerPoint presentation.
Add the Mentimeter PowerPoint add-in.
Select the same Menti that you added to the LMS.
Insert the Menti into your PowerPoint presentation.
You can now present the Menti slide directly from PowerPoint.
Note: Students need to open the Menti through the LMS assignment.
If a student tries to join from outside the LMS, for example by scanning the QR code or entering the voting code, they will see a message telling them to open the Menti from their LMS platform.
When students open the assignment through the LMS, they can participate and interact with the Menti as normal.
Using PowerPoint and Canvas
In Canvas, the setup is slightly different. Start by creating the assignment in Canvas.
Open your Canvas course.
Go to Assignments.
Create a new assignment.
Select Mentimeter as the external tool.
Choose the Menti you want to use.
Save and publish the assignment.
Once the assignment has been created in Canvas, add the same Menti to PowerPoint using the Mentimeter PowerPoint add-in. You can then present the Menti from PowerPoint while students access it through Canvas.
Important note about existing results
If you add a Menti to PowerPoint first and the Menti already has results, you may not be able to change the participant settings later.
This is important because the correct participant settings need to be enabled in order to use the Menti as a graded LMS assignment.
To avoid issues, make sure the Menti is set up correctly for LMS participation before collecting responses.
