LMS integrations FAQ

Common questions around our LMS integrations with various LMS, using LTI 1.3 Advantage, including links to other relevant information.

Updated today

General

Q. Which LMS platforms is Mentimeter integrated with?

A. We have developed and tested solutions for Canvas, Moodle, and coming soon, Blackboard and D2L. However as we have built the integration on the latest LTI 1.3 Advantage protocol, you may find that more platforms than that are supported. We cannot prevent users from trying it out if they want, but we will not offer any support so we strongly recommend persuading customers from doing so. Instead, let’s make sure we collect interest in new LMS that we can support when it makes sense for us.

Q: Where does Mentimeter appear inside the LMS?

The Mentimeter LTI tool appears in placements set up by your admin. Placements vary per LMS platform, see below for more platform specific placements.

By default, in Canvas LMS, we support three placements:

  • Link selection

  • Assignment selection

  • Module Menu (Modal)

In Moodle there is only one "Placement" in the Activity/resource modal.

In Blackboard ...

Q: Who can set up the integration?

A: Only LMS admins can configure the LTI integration, in collaboration with a Mentimeter admin. Keep in mind that LMS integrations are only available for Mentimeter Enterprise subscriptions.

Q: Can we share Mentimeter’s IP-address with customers so they can access Mentis from their firewall?

A: It is not a good idea. We are using Amazon's shared pool of IP addresses, which is very large and can change if Amazon decides to do so. When that happens, Mentimeter will stop working. We don’t want to rely on this list for security. Instead, the LTI protocol we are using for the integration supports client authentication with short term credentials, which is the most trusted industry standard for security.

Q: Can an Admin update an integration once it's set up?

A: Yes, LMS Admins can modify placements and their names after setting up the integration. Either making it easier, or more difficult to find for instructors. Changing student privacy settings may create some strange behaviour on already added Mentis, so we recommend testing the changes on a smaller scale if this should be needed (Say test up a course, add content, change the integration and observe what happens).

Q: What happens to the Mentis added to the LMS if the integration is severed? Are there still standard Menti URLs, and what will be left in their courses and grades?

A: Any Menti added to LMS still exists as a regular menti, available on Mentimeter. If for some reason the integration is removed, the menti, and all the votes, will still remain on Mentimeter.com. Any grades that were synced back to the gradebook will remain there after the integration is removed. In case the integration is removed with some grades not being synced, the votes/answers will be visible in Mentimeter, but will no longer be possible to sync to their LMS.

Q: If there are Mentimeter updates, would we need to refresh the key somehow, update the integration or do the setup again?

A: There will be no need to update keys or integrations.

Q: We use Moodle long-term support (LTS) - are there specific versions we need to worry about?

A: We don't have specific version requirements, other than running a version that supports LTI 1.3 integrations.

Data, Privacy & Legal

Q: How is student data handled?

A: Integrating Mentimeter with your LMS gives institutions unparalleled control of their student data, and exactly what is shared, or not shared with Mentimeter. Thanks to the integration, we are able to both keep sensitive data off our servers, whilst still unlocking all advanced features Mentimeter offers, allowing teachers to give grades, reduce harassment, and give more tailored feedback to students thanks to our participant verification features

  • Mentimeter follows strict Data Privacy and Security standards.

  • IT admins can decide how much data to share with Mentimeter during configuration of the integration. This allows us to be fully compliant with all countries that require any sensitive student data to be stored within their borders.

Q: How exactly does Mentimeter ensure students data is not stored on their servers?

A: This varies between platforms, however in all cases, when configuring the integration, you can choose which user data is shared with Mentimeter.

  • In canvas you can choose "None (anonymized)" in the integration setup.

  • In Moodle you can select "Never" for names and email addresses in Privacy settings in the tool settings.

Note, when choosing to not share user data, two things happen:

  1. You CAN still use Menti where the students login and verify their identities - allowing a teacher to use grading functionality as well as seeing a reduction of bullying, harassment or other unwanted behaviours.

  2. Mentimeter only stores an anonymous reference, such as "student-2185a966155baa9e2fb597298febecbc" only. Once this is synced back to the LMS, the LMS gradebook who knows the email, or name belonging to that student reference will make the data non-anonymized.

Q: Are student responses anonymized?

A: Mentis added using the LMS integration can authenticate students with their LMS credentials.

Mentimeter records attendance, participation, and quiz results alongside an individual audience identifier. For LMS participants (i.e. students) this identifier can be anonymized (e.g. LMS ID) or Identified (i.e. user name or email address). Again, as Admins you decide yourselves what data you wish to share with Mentimeter. Read more here.

For Instructors, Course Designers, Teacher's assistants

Q: I want Menti to be 100% anonymous as it has always been.

A: Make sure Login is required is off. This way your students will be able to join a Menti using the QR code.

Q: How can I grade Mentis in an LMS?

A: Add the Menti as an assignment as you would normally do and make sure that in the Interactivity settings Login required and Participant names required are on.

Q: How does the Mentimeter LTI tool meet Accessibility standards?

A: The integration is essentially offering you the core Menti experience, natively in your LMS. Therefore, the integration hold the same high standard the entire Mentimeter application does. It works well with keyboard only use, and screen readers. Click here for more detailed information around Mentimeter's accessibility standards

Q: Can I reuse existing Mentis?

A: Yes, we opted to leave this possible, but we strongly recommend duplicating the Menti and using it as “new”. Re-using the same Menti means having potential multiple courses worth on enrolment in the same Menti and mixing up participation and grades.

Q: How do grades sync from Mentimeter to my LMS Gradebook?

A: Follow the below steps. You can do this either in the LMS or from Mentimeter.com

  • After presenting, leave the present view, and you will find yourself back in the editor.

  • Click on the Results tab at the top of the screen, to go to the results view of the Menti you used

  • Click Sync results to LMS.

  • Grades will appear in the LMS Gradebook.

Note: Re-syncing at a later time will override any edited grades inside your LMS.

Q: How is attendance measured?

A: Attendance is based on whether a student joins a Menti session through Canvas with their verified LMS account. Simply joining the Menti is enough for Attendance to be counted, no other actions, such as responses, comments, or reactions are required.

Q: How is participation rate measured?

A: Participation rate shows the percentage of slides a student has participated on. Sometimes known as Engagement rate, a student with a score of 75%, will have e.g. responded to 3 out 4 slides in the Menti. Reactions, comments and questions do not count towards the participation rate.

Q: How are correct answers measured?

A: For quiz competition slides with a correct answer selected, Mentimeter tracks which students answered correctly.

The number of correct answers per student is recorded and can be synced back to the Canvas Gradebook. E.g. A student with 4 out of 5 correct responses will have a grade of 80%. Only correct answers are counted, answering speed is not taken into account.

Note: this works only for Quiz Competition slides, not Multiple Choice Questions slides.

Q: Can students join using the QR code?

A: Yes, as long as login is not required. If teachers want to make sure the students can join only via de LMS, they need to toggle on the Login required option in the Interactivity tab.

In this case, if students try to join they will see this message: “Open Menti from your LMS platform”:

Q: Can I use Mentimeter in the Quiz Module in Canvas?

A: No, but you can create a Quiz in Mentimeter as an activity or an assignment.

Students

Q: Do I need a Mentimeter account to participate?

A: No. Provided you join via your LMS, your login will be verified and you can start participating.

Q: Will my grades appear in Canvas?

A: Yes, if the Menti was an assignment, and once your instructor syncs results. Check the Grades tab in Canvas or speak to your instructor ahead of the Menti to understand if it a graded Menti, or perhaps just for fun.

Troubleshooting tips: Getting stuck somewhere? Here's a short checklist of things that might be getting in your way:

  1. Is the integration still active? Check with an admin to make sure it hasn't been deleted or disabled.

  2. Do you have access to the Menti presentation you are trying to open? As an instructor, you will see Mentimeter items from other teachers in Canvas, but if you click on one that you do not have access to in Mentimeter, you will see an error. Ask the owner to invite you as a collaborator if you believe you should have access.
Note: we are planning to provide access automatically to all teachers in a course so this will be less of an issue in the future.
