If your Mentimeter presentation contains words in a different language than the presentation's main language, for example the French word Bonjour in an English presentation, you can mark those words with the correct language using the Screen reader language tool. Screen readers will then switch pronunciation and read the word correctly. This feature is available on all Mentimeter plans, and the marking applies everywhere the text is shown, including what participants see on their own devices.
Why mark text with a different language?
Screen readers use language information to decide how words should be pronounced. If your presentation is set to English but includes Bonjour, a screen reader may try to pronounce it as English, which can sound confusing. Marking the word as French tells the screen reader to switch to French pronunciation, making multilingual content easier to understand and providing a better experience for people who rely on assistive technology. Even small language changes make a big difference for accessibility.
Step 1: Turn on the Screen reader language tool
Open your presentation in the Edit view.
Click the Settings icon (cogwheel).
Go to Accessibility.
Toggle on Show language tool when editing.

Step 2: Mark a word or phrase with its language
Select the word or phrase on your slide.
In the toolbar at the bottom of the editor, click the Screen reader language button.
Choose the language of the selected text from the list.

You can:
Mark multiple words or phrases within the same text field.
Use different languages within the same slide.
Change or remove a language mark at any time.
This works for all text fields across all slide types.
How it works
When you highlight text with a different language, we add the appropriate language information in the code (for example: <span lang="fr">Bonjour</span>).

Does not affect how your text looks
Helps screen readers interpret the text correctly
Works alongside your presentation’s main language setting

Marking words in a different language helps you meet WCAG 2.x Success Criterion 3.1.2 (Language of Parts), which requires multilingual content to be identified so screen readers can interpret it accurately.
